Roanoke Settlement

Imagine you are a youngster living in the Roanoke Settlement.  You stand at the shore, watching the ship pull away, heading back to England to get supplies for the families of Roanoke.  What are you thinking?  How do you feel?
Now fast forward...
Your settlement is in crisis.  No one has come back with supplies.  You do not know of the war between England and Spain; all you know is the settlement is struggling to survive.
What you thinking?  How do you feel?

Write from the point of view of a 10 or 11 year old living at Roanoke.  Your answer should address both scenarios listed above.  Be sure to check for spelling, capitalization and punctuation.

  1. I am a youngster living in the Roanoke Settlement. I am standing at the shore watching the ship leave to go back to england to get more food and supplies.I'm thinking about my homeland england and all of the good things there. We will just be bringing it here.I'm also thinking about how life will be when they come back it will be wonderful.I feel excited and happy that we will have a new home. Now its Later on and no ships have arrived yet.Our settlement is struggling and is in crisis because we dont have all the things we need. The roanoke is at war but we dont know how it is going. I think that they have lost and failed to complete getting supplies.I think this settlement is a disaster and is doomed.I feel worried and sad.I feel like this whole thing was a complete failure we are in serious crisis.

  2. Mr.John White has just left our little Roanoke settlement and returned to England, to retrieve supplies for us, and I am worried he may never return to our settlement. I hope he will return with all the supplies he promised us. What if something happens to his ship? Our survival depends on his success. I am nervous and excited about this strange land.
Now months have pasted since Mr.White has left Roanoke, and we will probably die if does not return. But I believe Mr.White will return. Hopefully, before we all starve to death, or before we become mad with hunger. I wonder if he is alright, and what is taking him so long to return. Already we are in terrible shape, but we have few choices. We can hope and pray he will come, we can die here hungry, or we could leave our settlement to try to find food and supplies somewhere else. I am extremely worried, hungry, tired and frightened that we will not survive.

  4. I and a 10 year old living in Roanoke and Mr. John White has left to return to England for supplies and food for us. I am very worried that he won't return to our little settlement, Roanoke. But I know he will return with the supplies he said he would bring back.
Mr. John has not returned from England with the supplies he promised us and now i am very worried about him and wonder if he has died.We can hope he is safe and will return or we can search for food. I'm very hungry, worried and I fear we won't make it alive.

  5. As I see John White leaving I am excited for him to return with the things we need to survive. Soon we will be saved I hope they will bring everything we need. If he doesn't succeed we will starve.

He has not come back and are options are low. I am hungry. Where are they? Will they ever come back? Are they even ok? I hope so.

  6. We just set off Mr. John White to go back to england to get supplies and other needs for us here on Roanoke Island. I feel that he will return soon with what we need. I am also a little frightened: what if some thing happens? What if he doesn't come back? Wh-wh-what if he is just going back to stay and leave us here.
It has been so many months I have lost count. He has not come back yet. My people are dyning. some men have been going into the forest and writing something on a tree - CROATOAN - i think it is. I am to tired and weak to even think right now [cough] *wheeze*. PJB

  7. I, one of many Roanoke children, have just bid Mr. John White off. I am excited that I can finally feel hope that I will have food in a couple of months once again.
Now a year has past and I can see my settlement getting hungrier by the day but I am living only to see that big ship full of food and supplies return. I see my people have meetings to make a decision of what to do next. It is between leaving this camp for food or stay and hope that Mr. John White will return. Z.H.

    1. It is interesting that you are inferring that the settlers left Roanoke in search of food instead of assuming they died from disease or hunger.

  8. I'm a kid living in the Roanoke settlement and the people just left to get supplies. What if they don't come back? What will I do then? (1 month later) Oh no!! They did not come back and they are in trouble!! I can't just live here alone with my family!! I need to have extra people to protect me!! What if the natives turn on us and capture me!!

  9. As Mr. john White sails away, I cheer for him just as the other citezens of Roanoke. They may not realize it, but I am despretly trying to conceal my true emotions. I fear that White will not return with the goods he promised us . He seems like a good man, but I hope he lives up to his promises.

    Twelve Monthes Later:

Unfortunatly, my worries came to life. It has been twelve monthes, and White has still not returned. Our settlement is growing weak. My baby sister, who was just born is sick, and ready to pass on. It is now winter and no one can afford blankets, so people are starting to die from the cold. I don't know where White is, or what happened to him, but what I do know is if we don't get help soon, our settlement will die out.

  11. Mr. White is pulling away to get us supplies. He is my hero! Without him we wouldn't be getting more food, water, and overall supplies. This also worries me though. What if Mr. White and his crew dont come back! Many people are desparate for the food now. My family is getting sick, just as others of Roanoke.

    1 year later...

Mr. White still has not returned yet. Everyone is dying!! I have gone 3 weeks wthout food, and 5 days without water! My parents have passed, Mr. White were ever you are please come!

  12. I am a 10 year old boy and there goes John White to get supplies, hooray is what we the Roanoke tribe chant as he leaves. I feel so happy that are tribe might actual survive for longer period of time and I can eat enough to last my family and I days. I know it will be the best day ever when the ship arrives because of all the goods and water.

    FAST FORWARD 18 MONTHS.

This is terrible that the ship hasn't came yet and it has been 18 months, oh how worried I am because what if we don't get are supplies, then we will die soon. I feel so sorry for use and John White where ever he is right now. I think will try doing more work to help us survive for how long it will be until John arrives. -N.A.

  13. Wow. It has been so wonderful to get here, new plants, new animals, new everything! But I really don't think we needed to send Mr. White. We have all the things we need! Once Mr. White comes back, then we will have feast, after feast, after feast! Except I do have some doubt, because how can Mr. White make it all the way back to England by himself. But that is no big worry, he can manage.

Oooooh, it's already been three whole years! My opinions have changed greatly, and my what ifs are true! everyone starving, why couldn't we have just learned to farm in the first place! Everything is breaking down, how can we live without FOOD!? Where are the Indians, where is stupid John White! We're out here in the middle of NOWHERE, what are we going to do! Oh this is TER-RI-BLE!

  15. When living in Roanoke settlement I get a little worried about when Mr. John White sails away. I am also happy because we are going to get new foods. Now my fears come into play .What if he does not come back with food? Will we survive? will we be able to hunt for food since we used to have servant? Will the native americans take over us and have a war? I hope he comes back.

    Months Later

Now my worries came true. Mr White did not come back with any food did he leave us behind? Did he die will he was sailing? Are colony in getting weak and sick. Now it is winter is is so cold. little kids are not surviving to cold harsh weather. The blankets are very expensive . I white does not come soon we will die.

  17. I'm 11 years old, at a place that is safe, warm, and free of worries. All up to now where our captain has left to go get supplies. My parents are worried about his return but I say "Mom he hasn't even left" and she laugh's. But now that he's left shore I think were all worried.

It's been a few years since captain left. He hasn't returned with supplies. Now when my mom worries I say "maybe'. Now we are in crisis everyone in the town is dying and we are hungry and need supplies we don't even know what's happening in England. Now I don't think anyone will survive...
